Do you enjoy organizing events and working with people? Are you passionate about trails and environmental stewardship? The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, located in the beautiful San Francisco Presidio, is looking for a new member of our team.

Position Summary

The Volunteer and Events Coordinator leverages volunteer efforts and plans and organizes trail events that serve the Ridge Trail Council’s overall mission, strategy, and work plan. He/she is responsible for creating volunteer opportunities and strategic events that raise funds, increase public-awareness, and attract and engage new supporters to strengthen the Ridge Trail Council. He/she works closely with the staff team on the overall work progam and communications.

This position may be either full-time, or potenitally 80% time, if desired. The position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Carry out volunteer program to support outings, events, committees, board development, and promote Ridge Trail membership

  • Recruit and orient new volunteers, including advocates, outing leaders, trail stewardship volunteers, event volunteers, help around the office, or other professional skills
  • Organize volunteer training, communication, tracking, and appreciation


  • Plan, promote, and handle day-of logistics of signature trail events (e.g. Ridge to Bridge & Ridge Trail Cruz) large volunteer events (e.g. Tour de Fat & Ridge Trail Day), and on-going outings and smaller events, in collaboration with other staff
  • Manage registration, tracking, and reporting
  • Develop strategies to ensure events raise funds and bring in support from members, corporations, key partners, and attract new audience
  • Engage land agency partners on events and outings, serve as a liaison

Additional Duties

  • Manage communication to volunteers and event participants including developing content for eNews, twice yearly paper newsletter, updating website, and posting to social media and other promotion outlets
  • Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders including other trail organizations, agency partners, and community and corporate partners
  • Support Board initiatives and committees, including regular communication with local Trail Advocacy Groups and the Board Development Committee and Trail Committee
  • In collaboration with other staff and board, help plan and handle logistics for fundraisers, member and donor cultivation events
  • Develop annual work plan, event plans and track budgets


  • A passion for trails and interest in engaging and inspiring volunteers!
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office required. Working knowledge of Salesforce or other databases, Eventbrite, Photoshop, InDesign, Rallybound, Campaign Monitor, Google products a bonus
  • Proficiency in employing social media (FB, Twitter, Instagram) to bolster participation and awareness
  • Strong internal and external communications: comfortable with public presentations and writing for communications pieces covering events
  • Minimum 2 years related experience
  • Ability to juggle deadlines and focus both on details and the big picture
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends when needed
  • Valid California Drivers’ Licence is required
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds (carry, set up and take down displays) and walk 8-10 miles on natural surface paths
  • Knowledge of Bay Area trails, outdoor recreation, land use planning and/or advocacy is a plus
