The Bay Area Ridge Trail ultimately will be a 550+ mile trail encircling the San Francisco Bay along the ridge tops, open to hikers, equestrians, mountain bicyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts of all types. So far, we have dedicated over 310 miles of trail for use by Bay Area residents, now and forever.

The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is the nonprofit organization that plans, acquires, builds, maintains, and promotes the Ridge Trail.

Penitencia Creek Trail

The Penitencia Creek Trail in the Berryessa neighborhood of San Jose is the newest segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. The 3 mile trail meanders along the creek through east San Jose, and is currently open between Mabury Road and Noble Road.

This 78-acre linear park and regional trail incorporates parklands and open space from a number of managing agencies including Santa Clara County, the City of San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley Water District. The trail provides access to Penitencia Creek County Park. the city of San Jose's Penitencia Creek Park, the Berryessa Community Center and other neighborhood facilities. Future portions of the trail will connect it to San Jose's Alum Rock Park, and the Coyote Creek Park Chain
